My momma taught me to keep you safe A little demon had to lock away I was ashamed of you Afraid of losing you I think it’s time we set the score straight It's not you versus me now We're on the same team We're on the same team Let's play nice together now I'm cheering for us now We're on the same team We're on the same team Let's play nice together now Now I’m unlearning what mom taught Finally listening to what you want I never dreamed that you Could have dreams, too Now this is pretty good what we’ve got To my surprise I’m finding Freeing you has not destroyed me To my delight I’m finding Freeing you is freeing me Freeing you is freeing me

about

We are not people who have bodies - we are our bodies. For me, the process of learning to reconnect with and love my body is ongoing. Old habits die hard, but new habits are worth forging.

I think my mom would want me to clarify that the “momma” in this song refers to my cultural mothers, not her specifically. I've never called my mom “momma,” nor talked with her about virginity or sexual pleasure, but I definitely love her very much!

Resources:
Peggy Orenstein, in her Ted Talk and book “Girls & Sex”, discusses intimacy justice, female sexual shame and pleasure, and how we can discuss sex with young women in ways to address both safety concerns and enjoyment.
OMGyes.com is an online curriculum to help women and people with vulvas learn what feels good for their own bodies.

Lyrics:
My momma taught me to keep you safe
A little demon had to lock away
I was ashamed of you
Afraid of losing you
I think it’s time we set the score straight

It's not you versus me now
We're on the same team
We're on the same team
Let's play nice together now

I'm cheering for us now
We're on the same team
We're on the same team
Let's play nice together now

Now I’m unlearning what mom taught
Finally listening to what you want
I never dreamed that you
Could have dreams, too
Now this is pretty good what we’ve got

To my surprise I’m finding
Freeing you has not destroyed me
To my delight I’m finding
Freeing you is freeing me
Freeing you is freeing me
